Our waterfront is open for Bay View members and guests to enjoy from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This year, the Howard Pettersen Sailhouse will be open from June 21 through August 15. The beach will have lifeguards for the same duration, with swim lessons offered as part of the Recreation program Mondays through Fridays.
The Howard Pettersen Sailhouse has many services available to members and guests. Interested parties can rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, sunfish, and other small watercraft. Storage is also available for those with kayaks or sunfish, and buoys are still available for the 146th Assembly Season.
Lockers are rented out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rentals for the season become available the first week of May and are available until all lockers have been reserved for the season. We are unable to reserve lockers ahead of May and cannot promise that renters will receive the same locker number they’ve received in previous summers. The locker fee is $80 for the season.
Buoys are available to members and non-members on a weekly or seasonal basis for craft under 24 feet. There are limited spots available so please contact the Harbormaster if you wish to reserve your spot in Bay View’s harbor. For members, the cost of a buoy rental is $50 a week or $600 for the season. For non-members, the cost of a buoy rental is $600 a week or $4000 for the season. Sailhouse workers are available to ferry you to and from your craft during the Assembly season, Monday through Saturday 10-5 pm, Sundays 1-5 pm.
Members and guests are welcome to utilize a variety of different watercraft during the Sailhouse’s hours of operation. There are Sunfish, Harpoons, Bugs, single and tandem kayaks, as well as standup paddleboards available for rent. To rent the Harpoon, sailors will have to pass a basic competency test. We have trained staff on constant bay-watch during Sailhouse hours, monitoring the activity of boaters in case anyone is in need of rescue.
The Bay View Sailing program offers multi-level courses designed to take students from beginner (ages 9+ and have passed level 3 swimming or equivalent) to experienced sailors. This program follows the U.S. Sailing Instructor curriculum and has at least one U.S. Sailing Certified instructor on staff to lead and direct the program. Various group sessions, as well as individual private lessons, are offered. Our fleet of boats includes Sunfish, Bugs, and Harpoon. All sailors will experience and receive instruction at various levels on each of these boats. We host regatta races of Sunfish every Saturday afternoon during the Recreation season. A textbook may be purchased at the first sailing class for $15.00. Adults interested in sailing lessons should contact sailing instructors for private lessons.
