Class: Historical Model Railroads – The Intertwined Histories of Bay View and the GR&I Railroad

The histories of Bay View and of the Grand Rapids & Indiana rail line are inextricably intertwined. The first passenger train arrived in Petoskey on December 30, 1873; six months later, three trains a week were coming to the city. Due to the popularity of Bay View, GR&I extended regular service to the Association in 1877, and soon operated several trips per day. Historic Railroads of Northern Michigan, Inc. maintains a small museum in town dedicated to the history of the railroad in northern Michigan. Complete with a model train layout with operating HO scale locomotive and rolling stock as well as scratch-built models of the historic buildings of Petoskey, the museum makes for a delightful excursion. Dave Comer, President of Historic Railroads of Northern Michigan, Inc., will give a talk in Evelyn Hall. Immediately after, we will visit the museum.
