The Rarely Discussed History of Prohibition in Harbor Springs
Harbor Springs Area Historical Society Curator Beth Wemigwase will show how sweeping changes brought on by WWI, women’s suffrage and national temperance movements led to the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1920 (which outlawed the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages). Harbor Springs supported a thriving underground economy of bootlegging, speakeasies and casinos, complete with elaborate delivery schemes, escape tunnels and even connections to Detroit’s notorious Purple Gang.
