Thomas C. Shearer
August 15, 1937– March 12, 2010
Thomas C. Shearer, the immediate past president of the Bay View Association, passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 12.
The cause of death was apparently heart-related.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Grace; his daughters Kirsten (Todd) Lowell and Melanie (Tim) Hoeksema; and his extended family.
Tom served as the 21st president of Bay View from 2002-2008. Prior to that he was secretary. He served a total of 27 years on the board of trustees.

During his presidency, Tom was especially concerned with the future of John M. Hall Auditorium, Bay View’s premier venue. He appointed a special committee to assess the facility’s future, a process which culminated in a multi-year campaign to ensure the auditorium remains an elite facility for cultural arts and worship today and in the future.
Current President Larry Ternan said of Shearer, “Tom truly loved Bay View, its people, history, music, arts, worship, tennis and lakefront. He provided strong leadership, dedication and tireless energy and enthusiasm. His infectious laugh and presence on Bay View’s grounds and in our lives will be deeply missed."
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at Metcalf-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Rd. SE, in Grand Rapids. The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at the First United Methodist Church, 227 E. Fulton St., also in Grand Rapids.
