Project Outreach at Bay View

The purpose of Project Outreach is to organize and coordinate charitable and volunteer opportunities inside and outside Bay View consistent with traditional Bay View values of compassion, caring, and human justice.

Project Outreach, an on-going activity of the Worship and Religious Life committee, is driven by two primary goals:

  1. Build and sustain links between Bay View residents and appropriate volunteer-based organizations both within and outside Bay View.
  2. Develop awareness of, and support for, established charitable organizations working to alleviate human suffering on a local, national, or international basis.

Initiatives will emphasize intergenerational involvement, direct service, and educational awareness.

This year’s Project Outreach activities include:

  1. Nothing But Nets campaign, which provides anti-malaria nets for vulnerable families in Africa. A single net costs $10; checks can be made to Bay View Association with notation of Nothing But Nets or UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). All checks are fully tax deductible.
  2. Listing on Bay View web site Outreach page of requests for volunteers by Bay View and community organizations. Persons interested in volunteering can link to participating organizations.
  3. Facilitating cottage parties to encourage dialog and education for future volunteer and outreach activities.
  4. Petoskey-Bay View Crop Hunger Walk. Last year’s CROP Walk for Hunger resulted in just over $25,000 (25 percent to Manna Food Project and Brother Dan’s Pantry; 75 percent to Church World Service) being collected to provide hope and food for those in need. Habitat for Humanity

North Central Michigan College
If you are a teacher, or educator, you might be interested in knowing about tutoring opportunities at North Central Michigan College. Please give Liz Otto a call at 231-348-6693, or e-mail her at: eotto@ncmich.edu.

Petoskey High School
Petoskey High School counseling department have students who need tutoring assistance. Students can drive and meet someone in a public place, like the Petoskey Library. If you can help, please contact Karen Starkey at 231-347-6700.

ReStore, Habitat for Humanity
Great volunteer opportunities for families, as they accept children working with adults. They need help with receiving goods, cleaning and stocking shelves.

Manna Food Project
They need help every day from 8-4 p.m. with stocking, repacking, and warehousing of food items. Current help is also needed in their vegetable garden and the packing of snack packs for children. Manna will accept children of all ages if accompanied by an adult. Contact Kathy Hart at 231-347-8852 if you have an hour to spare. This is a great intergenerational activity!

Salvation Army
They need help at their Thrift Store with receiving goods and inventory. The coordinator must be contacted before you volunteer and you must be at least 16 years of age with parental approval. Store hours are: Monday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

RSVP – Lead With Experience
The RSVP provides volunteer opportunities for people age 55 and older with a myriad of experience and interests from all economic, educational, and social backgrounds to serve in a variety of settings throughout their communities. RSVP Volunteers provide services that utilize their own talents and interests. Volunteers work with non-profit agencies to assist them in meeting their mission. Seasonal volunteers are welcome. RSVP is a nationwide program that has been in existence for 35 years. They are a program of the Friendship Centers of Emmet County. Local Bay View Opportunities

Boys' and Girls’ Club needs crossing guards for street areas near Camp when Camp is dismissed at 11:30 a.m. weekdays. They also need volunteers who can be trained for camp registration on Mondays. Please contact Recreation Director Marshall Dunlap at rorevmgd@comcast.net.

Worship and Religious Life Committee is looking for volunteer(s) to purchase breakfast supplies each weekend for visiting minister/lecturer. Please contact Sharon Snyder, chair, at 231-347-0343. They also have a Stephens Ministry program if you know of someone who would benefit from a visit from a neighbor trained in Stephens Ministry. Contact Shirley Snyder at 231-348-5253.
